Michael Jordan Speaks Out On Charlotte Riots
When arguably the greatest basketball player of all-time calls for a peaceful demonstration, the people shall listen.
In the wake of the violent protests in Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlotte Hornets owner and Hall of Famer Michael Jordan has called for peaceful demonstration and conversation within the cities borders. Jordan expressed condolences in a statement Thursday morning to the family of Keith Scott, a 43-year-old African-American man who was killed by a black police officer, and to those injured in the protests that followed. During the protests, a Charlotte Hornets team store was looted.
In the statement, Jordan said,
”In light of the tragic events of the past three days, it is more important than ever that we restore calm and come together, as a community, in peaceful demonstration and conversation, and in constructive and non-violent ways.”
Jordan also opened up on his father’s 1993 death.
“As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers. I grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, as I know their pain all too well.”
Jordan only makes a number of public appearances per year. When a global icon like Jordan speaks out, he has the ability to pull Charlotte protesters away from violence. He blessed us with pure entertainment on a nightly basis throughout his fifteen year career; satisfy “His Airness’” wants for the sake of the city.
