LeBron James Feels Cavaliers Needs A Backup Point Guard Upgrade

Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James has openly admitted that his team needs an upgrade at the point guard position off the bench. Kay Felder—a rookie out of Oakland—who is averaging 6.0 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 11.9 minutes per game remains their backup, and has been effective during his time on the court. It hasn’t been enough, though.

According to ESPN, Cleveland is keeping an eye on Rajon Rondo because of the conflict in Chicago. Also, former LeBron James teammate Mario Chalmers is on Cleveland’s radar. James and Chalmers were teammates in Miami from 2010-2014 where they won two NBA championships together.

The 2016 NBA champions have been without their superstar Kyrie Irving in the last three games; an absence which gave the team an even better insight on how much of an upgrade they need at point guard.

LeBron James feels Cleveland needs a backup far more experienced than Felder because he is still in the learning process

”That was obvious from Day 1,” James said, as quoted by ESPN. ”First day of training camp. We don’t have a reliable, veteran backup point guard. Kay [Felder] is in the process of learning on the fly. He’s a rookie and is going to have his mistakes and things of that nature. It’s tough on him because we’re a franchise trying to win a championship. He has to have a fast-track mind. But we don’t have a backup point guard. Us having 13 assists [against Miami] is not who we are. I had half the team’s assists, and that’s not good for our team because we’ve got guys who need the ball in their hands and put the ball in the right position and the right spots for them to be successful. It’s tough for us.,” James finished.

Cleveland is currently on the search for an experienced and impactful point guard for the second unit. Rajon Rondo or Mario Chalmers may be their most qualified option.
