Will Derrick Rose Be Traded To The Minnesota Timberwolves?
A trade rumor about the Minnesota Timberwolves being one of the teams that have talked to the New York Knicks about acquiring point guard Derrick Rose before Thursday’s trade deadline was brought up by ESPN on Monday night.
It would make a lot of sense for Minnesota to trade for Rose.
First of all, Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau and Derrick Rose go way back. They’ve been a player-coach tandem for seven years back in Chicago, and they’ve been fairly succesful. Rose won his MVP award, Thibodeau was coach of the year, and the Bulls played in the Conference Finals.
Secondly, Derrick Rose’s contract with this season’s $21.3 million salary expires this coming summer. A Derrick Rose trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves would clear an extra $29 million off the Wolves’ salary cap for the next two years, due to Rose’s expiring salary.
Wolves point guard Ricky Rubio is most likely to be included in a possible deal, and the Knicks seem to be very interested. For the Timberwolves, Rose would be the starting point guard for the rest of the season before rookie Kris Dunn will be taking over next season.
