Marcus Smart’s Boston Accent Problems – ‘The Harbour’
“Boston State-House is the Hub of the Solar System. You couldn’t pry that out of a Boston man if you had the tire of all creation straightened out for a crow-bar.”
-Oliver Wendell Holmes, The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table, 1858
Marcus Smart was born and raised in Flower Mound, Texas. In college, he played for Oklahoma State. The Texan accent, and the Oklahoman Accent couldn’t be much more far a way from the Boston Accent. Marcus Smart had to learn this the hard way.
The ‘No R’ Lifestyle.
This past week, Marcus Smart published an article in The Players’ Tribune telling some stories from his first couple of years in the league and with the Celtics. One funny story stood out. It was about a conversation Smart had with an elderly lady in Cambridge and his problems with the Boston Accent.
“One day, at an AT&T store in Cambridge, I spent 10 confusing minutes (literally 10) talking to a nice old lady about “the harbor” … before I realized that she was talking about “Harvard.” We had just had a completely different conversation for 10 minutes. When I figured it out, I apologized about mishearing her Boston accent, and she gave me a look, like, O.K., buddy.”
