Stephen Curry Hated Sports Illustrated’s Latest Cover: ‘That Was Terrible’
The latest Sports Illustrated issue addressed the biggest sports story of the week on its cover – the recent activism in the sports world.
They captioned the cover: “A Nation Divided … Sports United.”
But many people have a problem with the cover, and Stephen Curry is one of them. The problem doesn’t have anything to do with the story, or covering these latest events (President Donald Trump’s criticism of NFL players protesting during the national anthem and his decision to withdraw the Warriors’ White House invitation), but with who is missing on the cover.
Colin Kaepernick! Kaep didn’t make the cover despite starting the movement at the start of the 2016 NFL season. Warriors star Stephen Curry was asked for his take on the SI cover and how it omitted Colin Kaepernick. Curry said:
“That was terrible. It’s just kind of capitalizing on the hoopla and the media and all that nonsense. The real people that understand exactly what’s been going on, and who’s really been active and vocal and truly making a difference, if you don’t have Kaepernick front and center on that, something’s wrong. It’s kind of hard to see how certain narratives take place, being prisoners of the moment. I was kind of joking around yesterday when I saw that certain Instagram handle. At the end of the day, that stuff really doesn’t matter. It’s about the true message and really highlighting the people that are doing the right thing”
