Celtics’ Rookie Robert Williams Is About To Throw Away His NBA Career
Many thought Robert Williams III was going to be a lottery pick in this year’s NBA draft. Talentwise, there still is no doubt that he isn’t.
But, come draft night, he was dropping down until the Boston Celtics picked him up with their 27th pick. Why wasn’t he drafted earlier? Well, teams had concerns about his work ethic.
Unfortunately for him, he’s done nothing to silence the critics, but confirmed the allegations instead.
The SEC Defensive Player of the Year, already missed his introductory conference call with the Boston Celtics, because he overslept. He now missed his flight back to Boston and was not present for the start of summer league practice, because he overslept again.
Can’t make this stuff up: Celtics say rookie first-round pick Robert Williams, who was introduced here Friday, missed his flight back to Boston and was not present for the start of summer league practice today. Williams already overslept an introductory conference call.

This led to Williams already being on thin ice with head coach Brad Stevens and the team’s front office – without even playing (or practicing) for the team once. Williams talked to Stevens and got a much needed wake-up call.
“I talked to coach (Brad) Stevens when I got back: He obviously explained to me about the opportunities; it’s not that many. It’s definitely a wake-up call.”
Robert Williams knows he's on thin ice right now with the #Celtics. “I talked to coach (Brad) Stevens when I got back,” Williams said. “He obviously explained to me about the opportunities; it’s not that many. It’s definitely a wake-up call.”
