Donovan Mitchell Needs To Be In Next Year’s 3-Point Contest After Watching This Shooting Clinic
Donovan Mitchell was one of the biggest surprises of last season.
The rookie instantly became the fan favorite in Utah and made people forget about Gordon Hayward, who signed with the Boston Celtics last summer. He also seems to enjoy his new home and is on the verge of becoming a local hero at the Salt Lake.
He averaged 20.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.5 steals in his rookie season and even was able to increase his averages through his 11 playoff games (24.4/5.9/4.2/1.5). The playoffs in general were insane for Mitchell, who put his name in the NBA’s record books. Per Wikipedia:
“He set a new record for points by a shooting guard in their first two postseason games with 55 points, breaking Michael Jordan’s record of 53 points. Mitchell led the Jazz to a 4-2 series win over the Thunder, averaging 28.5 points a game on 46.2 percent shooting. His 171 points in the series were the third-most ever by a rookie in his first six playoff games, behind only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain. His 38 points in Game 6 (on 14-of-26 shooting) marked the highest scoring output by a rookie in a series-clinching win since 1980.”
He’s already almost the perfect player, but needs to improve his shooting to become an absolute superstar in this league. In the regular season, he was shooting 43.7% from the field and 34% from three, in the playoffs the percentages went down to 42% and 31.1%. But Mitchell wouldn’t be Mitchell if he didn’t work on his game. He spends most of his summer in the gym working on his shot, and according to this video, it’s paying off big time. After watching this video, I think he needs to take part in next year’s three point contest. In the video, he goes 19 for 19 from three, including 13 straight.
