Cavs Could Lose Draft Pick For Signing And Waiving Patrick McCaw

This past summer, Patrick McCaw turned down a two year/$5.2 million deal from the Warriors. After two long months as a free agent, the Cleveland Cavaliers signed him to a two-year, non guaranteed contract. But after only three games with the team, he was waived again. The shooting guard then signed a one year deal with the Toronto Raptors worth $786,000.

The NBA now plans to investigate and will be talking to the representatives of McCaw today, according to a report by Mark Medina of the Mercury News.

The NBA has continued its formal review into Cleveland signing McCaw to a two-year, $6 million deal and subsequently waiving him three days later before his contract would become guaranteed.

The league plans to speak to McCaw’s representatives on Thursday to probe into if McCaw and the Cavaliers reached an agreement to waive him so he could become an unrestricted free agent, sources said.

The Golden State Warriors are under the impression that the Cavaliers and McCaw colluted and had an agreement. Before signing with the Cavs, McCaw was a restricted free agent with the Warriors. Since Golden State didn’t match the Cavs’ offer, and with Cleveland waiving him basically immediately, he became an unrestricted free agent and was able to join the Raptors for less money.

If the league decides that it indeed was collusion, the Cavs could be fined or even lose a draft pick.
