The Heartbreaking Way Stephen Curry Found Out His Buddy Kevin Durant Will No Longer Be His Teammate
The Warriors’ dynasty has officially ended… for now.
Last night, Kevin Durant revealed that he will be signing a four year contract, worth $164 million with the Brooklyn Nets, even though the Warriors offered Durant a supermax contract worth $221 million over five years.
In Brooklyn, Durant will build a new dynasty, together with his friend, Kyrie Irving.
This means that the last time we saw Kevin Durant wear Warriors colors, was when he hobbled off the field with a torn achilles. Not the best goodbye. Not for KD, not for his teammates and not for Warriors fans.
When the news were revealed, Durant’s former star point guard colleague and friend, Stephen Curry was 37,000 feet in the air on a flight from Shanghai, China to New York City to see Durant. But if his goal was to convince the two-time Finals MVP to staying, he was too late.
Via The Athletic:
“Stephen Curry flew straight to the New York area from Shanghai, China. But he wasn’t going to pitch Kevin Durant on why he should stay with the Warriors. It was already too late. He was on the plane when the news broke that Durant was leaving for Brooklyn.
And Curry didn’t turn the jet around or cancel the trip. Because it wasn’t about recruiting. It was about respect. It was about thanks….
But Curry went to have one last moment with Durant as teammates. To tell him one more time how much he appreciated him for the three years they had. They’d won two championships together. Dominated the league together. Made history together. He was there to wish Durant happiness and peace, express his support for his decision. And when Curry got to Durant’s apartment in Manhattan, Durant confirmed to Curry his decision that their time together was over. Face to face. Man to man. Friend to friend.”
