In His Will, UNC Coaching Legend Dean Smith Requested That $200 Should Be Sent To Every Single Player He Ever Coached For A ‘Dinner Out’

Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, James Worthy, Antawn Jamison, Sam Perkins, Rasheed Wallace, Phil Ford, Jerry Stackouse, Charles Scott, Brad Daugherty – only two handful of basketball legends the late, great Dean Smith coached during his impressive 36 year-long coaching career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Smith coached from 1961 to 1997 and retired with 879 victories, appeared in 11 Final Fours, and won two national championships. The Hall of Famer always had great relationships with his players and was very proud of what they achieved in their following NBA careers.

His great respect for all of his players also was one of the reasons for Smith, who died in 2015, to will his trust to send $200 to each player he had coached during his 36-year old Tar Heel coaching career.

In a letter every single one of Smith’s former players received from his accountants at Miller McNeish & Breedlove, it was revealed that Smith requested that each of his former players would be sent a $200 check with following message:

“Enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith.”

The checks included the notation, “Dinner out.” Accoring to research by Sports Illustrated in 2015, Smith coached 184 players in his career, which is good for a grand total of $36800.
