Steve Kerr Credits His Successful Career To Michael Jordan: “I Owe Him Everything”

Steve Kerr has had a picture perfect career so far. Not only has he won five championships as a role player, he’s also continued his success as a coach, winning three championships with the Golden State Warriors.

In Netflix and ESPN’s joint production, ‘The Last Dance’, a 10-part documentary about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, an incident that occurred during Chicago Bulls training camp in 1995, before the start of the season the Bulls would end up winning a then NBA-record 72 games, came back to surface.

In practice, Jordan physically punished a smaller and slimmer Kerr. But Kerr wasn’t having any of it and fought back, which led to Jordan punching Kerr. Following the punch the two had a little boxing match, leaving Kerr with a black eye and the respect and trust of Michael Jordan.

This trust and respect by Jordan played a huge part in Kerr’s amazing career. On NBC’s ‘Sports Uncovered‘ podcast, the Warriors coach now opened up about how his experience playing with Jordan impacted the trajectory of his career, also saying that he owes everything to Jordan:

“It completely changed the rest of my life. Playing with Michael Jordan changed the entire course of my career.

I was able to play on these championship teams, made a name for myself, was able to get into TV, broadcasting, management, coaching and the reason people hired for me these jobs later on is because I played next to Michael Jordan.

I owe him everything.”
