Lakers Assistant Coach Phily Handy’s Hilarious Story Of How Kobe Cursed Him Out When They First Met
Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Phily Handy is no stranger to success.
Handy has been part of a coaching team for six straight NBA Finals, while winning three rings with the Cavaliers, Raptors and Lakers.
Handy had the privilege of coaching some of the greatest players in league history in Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. When Handy was guest on Danny Green’s podcast, ‘The Green Room’, he revealed how his and Kobe’s relationship started with Kobe coming at his neck, cursing him out.
“He texted me at like 2 o’clock in the afternoon after practice and said ‘man, I want to work out, meet me at the gym at 5:45’. So I was like, ‘damn, let’s go, let’s get it’. So that night, I showed up up at the gym at 5:45. I sat there for like an hour waiting for this dude. So the next morning, we practice at like 10, I show up at the facility at around 7:30, 8 o’clock… normal work. I show up and he’s there, and the first thing he does is to come at my neck. ‘What’s up mofo?!  You ain’t got’ show up for work?’ I’m like ‘Yo, I was here last night! You said 5:45’… he looked at me and was like ‘man, I meant 5:45 this morning, fool!’ … He was like ‘be here tomorrow.’
