Enes Kanter Doubles Down On China Criticism, Calls Out Xi To Close Down Uyghur Labor Camps
Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter has never shied away from voicing his opinion, or from fighting for what’s right.
This has led to problems for the big man before. A few years ago, Kanter was detained in Romania after his passport was “canceled” by the Turkish embassy. Kanter had previously criticized Turkish president Recep Erdogan. Turkey also issued an arrest warrant for Kanter, claiming he is a member of a terrorist organization.
Kanter eventually was released and was able to make it back to the U.S. He then immediately said that he was planning on applying for U.S. citizenship, something he’s been granted earlier this year.
Then, Kanter’s father was arrested and only let free, after the entire family disowned Enes Kanter. He basically can’t be in contact with his family, without putting them in danger nor visit his native country without the possibility of getting arrested.
Now, earlier this week, Kanter wanted to raise awareness on a different global topic – China and its wrongdoings.
While he first expressed his support for the Free Tibet movement, saying China’s leader Xi Jinping was a brutal dictator committing cultural genocide, which lead to China blocking all Boston Celtics games for now, he now double down on his China criticism and posted a video drawing attention to the human rights abuses suffered by the Uyghur people and other Muslim minorities.
“Right now as I speak this message, torture, rape, forced abortions, sterilizations, family separations, arbitrary detentions, concentration camps, political reeducation, forced labor … this is all happening right now to more than 1.8 million Uyghurs in the Xinjiang region in northwestern China.
The Chinese government has been taking sweeping measures to crackdown on the Uyghur people simply because they embrace their own religion, their own culture, language, history and identity. The Uyghur region has become an open-air prison and surveillance state where freedoms are non-existent for the Uyghur people. The Chinese government has sent Uyghurs along with Kazaks, Tajiks and other Muslims groups to concentration camps for simply applying for a passport, for texting someone overseas or for believing in anything that does not align with the Chinese Communist Party’s agenda.”
Heartless Dictator of China,
XI JINPING and the Communist Party of China.I am calling you out in front of the whole world.
Close down the SLAVE labor camps and free the UYGHUR people!Stop the GENOCIDE, now!#FreeUyghurs pic.twitter.com/eEoiw5Uz2K
