Doc Rivers Will Reportedly Become The Leading Candidate For Lakers Head Coaching Position If He Gets Fired

The Los Angeles Lakers recently fired championship head coach Frank Vogel and are now in the process of interviewing potential candidates for their vacant position. One person that they could possibly target is Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers.

Rivers’ name has been popping up in the Lakers head coaching radar for quite a while now. And, after the Philadelphia 76ers lost to the Miami Heat in the second-round of the playoffs, the speculations seem to have gotten stronger.

There’s no guarantee that Rivers will remain as head coach of the Sixers following their second-round exit from the NBA playoffs. If he gets fired, NBA insider Brian Windhorst believes that Rivers will likely receive a shot from the Lakers and will immediately become the leading candidate for their head coaching position.

“If Doc Rivers becomes free, the Los Angeles Lakers will definitely have interest,” Windhorst said on Get Up. “They have a process, they have numerous candidates, but he will immediately become a leading contender to get that Laker job.

“I don’t believe Doc Rivers is interested in coaching anywhere besides Philadelphia or Los Angeles next year. I think he would be totally fine returning.

“I think he would be totally fine not coaching and maybe working in broadcasting if that happens. But the Lakers would definitely want to get in front of him if he is let go by the Sixers.”
