Shaquille O’Neal Enjoyed ‘Winning Time’ But Criticized The Show For ‘Despicable Depiction Of Jerry West’

Earlier this year, HBO’s Showtime Lakers series, ‘Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty’, made some major headlines. But not only due to the fact that many fans watched and loved it, but also because  of the Lakers legends that are portrayed in the show, aren’t happy with it.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar blasted the show, and Jerry West demanded a retraction and an apology for ‘a baseless and malicious assault’ on his character, and even threatened Supreme Court action.

Now, former Lakers center Shaquille O’Neal has become the latest legend to voice some criticism with the show. Shaq said, while he enjoyed the show, he hated the depiction of Jerry West.

Per USA Today:

Q: You’ve criticized HBO’s “Winning Time” for an exaggerated depiction of Los Angeles Lakers former star and general manager Jerry West. Any other show critiques?

Shaq: This was before my time, but that depiction of Jerry West was despicable. He’s not that guy. Jerry West was a fine general manager, always did right by me. All the other stuff I thought was cool. As a fan, and someone who watches TV, the cinematography and action were great. It’s shot very well. But not the way they treated Mr. West.
