Byron Scott Thinks Showtime Lakers Could Beat The 1996-98 Chicago Bulls: “You Didn’t Have To Guard Dennis Rodman”

When the Chicago Bulls picked up Dennis Rodman in 1995, they hit a different stride and dominated the league unlike any other.

In their first season with the all-time great rebounder, the Bulls tallied 72 wins and eventually finished the playoffs with an NBA championship. Following a historic first year, the Bulls then went on to win the next two titles to complete a three-peat.

While the Bulls were such an absolute force with Rodman, former Los Angeles Lakers guard Byron Scott, who won three championships with the team, believes that the Showtime Lakers could take on the dominant Bulls squad.

The Showtime Lakers won five championships in the 1980s, beating the likes of the Julius Erving-led Philadelphia 76ers, Larry Bird-led Boston Celtics, and the Bad Boys Pistons along the way.

“You didn’t have to guard Dennis Rodman. On our team and in the 80s you had five guys on the court all those guys could dribble, shoot, rebound, run, I mean it was a different style of basketball. When I look at our era compared to this era, you know I always think that we would have been very competitive as a basketball team.”

“I still think we were one of the greatest teams that ever you know that ever played the game that was ever assembled. I’ll take us against that Bulls team you know with MJ, Rodman, and Scottie.”
