Watching your favorite team, or sports can be expensive. Not only if you attend live, but also if you just want to watch at home. Cable, League Pass, or other subscription based models will often cost you a small fortune.
This, and blackout restrictions, cause more and more fans to divert to illegally pirated livestreams.
During Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban asked NBA fans if they were watching on pirated streams. According to himself, he wanted to find out how prevalent it is.
