Giannis Antetokounmpo has become synonymous with the Milwaukee Bucks, having been drafted by the team and leading them to their first NBA championship in 2021. Antetokounmpo has remained loyal to the Bucks, and in response, the organization has diligently surrounded him with a competitive roster over the years.
While the current partnership between Antetokounmpo and the Bucks appears relatively stable at the moment, things could change in the near future when Antetokounmpo becomes eligible to sign a new contract starting September 22.
Although the Bucks have some security with two guaranteed years remaining on Antetokounmpo’s current deal and a player option of $51.9 million for 2025-26, any lapse in securing a contract extension could have serious implications for the team moving forward.
These circumstances have not gone unnoticed. According to Ian Begley of SNY Sports, teams across the NBA are keeping a close watch on Antetokounmpo’s contract situation, with the expectation that the two-time MVP may become available soon.
Per SNY Sports:
“It’s worth noting here that several teams are keeping an eye on the situation in Milwaukee concerning the future of Giannis Antetokounmpo, as we’ve previously noted. Antetokounmpo is eligible for an extension with Milwaukee this summer. Financially, it makes sense for Antetokounmpo to wait on signing an extension or new contract. I don’t know if the Knicks are one of those teams keeping an eye on the Antetokounmpo situation, but I’d imagine most teams are monitoring it.”
