The Los Angeles Lakers bolstered their center position on Tuesday by signing former Dallas Mavericks big man Christian Wood. Adding Wood to the roster provides much-needed size and floor spacing the team has been missing in the frontcourt.
NBA circles are buzzing with conversations about what Wood can really bring to the table. Last season, Wood struggled with his role, starting in only 17 games. However, there’s a widespread belief that he’s a great addition and will mesh better with the Lakers because of his strong fit with the roster.
Former NFL cornerback and current NBA analyst Richard Sherman echoed a similar perspective. However, while Sherman believes Wood will be a valuable asset for the Lakers, he made an unexpected comparison, likening the 27-year-old center to Lakers legend Pau Gasol.
“Pau Gasol – a Lakers great – jersey just went in the rafters, during his Lakers career averaged 18 and nine – or 18 and 10,” Sherman said. “This boy coming in is averaging 18 and nine over the last three years – 38 percent shooting from 3. I feel like he’s gonna be a great asset.”
