Yesterday, on October 25, 2023, a gunman opened fire at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, killing 22 people and injuring dozens more. The shooting is the deadliest mass shooting in Maine history and one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States in recent years.

The horrific mass shooting also is the reason, why the Boston Celtics have faced major backlash on social media. After the Celtics’ 108-104 wind over the New York Knicks in their season opener, the official Celtics account posted a graphic with the final score alongside the caption: “Our thoughts are with everyone in Lewiston, Maine”.

Fans immediately labeled the tweet as insensitive and inappropriate leading to quickly deleted the post getting deleted, before being reposted with the same caption, only this time with replies turned off and the graphic referencing their game no longer attached.
