Gordon Hayward Reveals 2019 Celtics Were Too Focused On Personal Goals To Win A Championship

The Boston Celtics, with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, were quite the topic in the NBA during their time. However, they only had one season with both Hayward and Irving healthy and playing together, culminating in a second-round playoff appearance at best.

Expectations were high for the Celtics in 2019. This was because, without Irving and Hayward, they had reached the Eastern Conference Finals and took a LeBron James-led team to 7 games in 2018 NBA playoffs. Everyone thought they’d do even better with Irving and Hayward back from injuries, and with Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart realizing their potential. But it didn’t work out that way.

Hayward recently looked back at the Celtics’ 2019 season. He talked about why the team, even with all its talent, didn’t impress much in the playoffs and got knocked out in the second round. Hayward was honest and said that not being able to give up personal goals was a big reason they didn’t win the championship.

“We all had too many agendas, and the agenda to win the whole thing wasn’t the main one.”
