Halloween night 2009 – a bat disrupted the NBA game between San Antonio Spurs and the Sacramento Kings.
The bat had already caused for game interuptions twice, when Ginobili took matters into his own hands, literally. Manu smacked the bat to the ground, and the game was able to continue. After the game, Ginobili, who needed to get rabies shots, said:
“When you can’t dunk anymore, you have to find a way to make it into the news. So that’s what I did. I grabbed a bat. I didn’t think it was a big deal. Then the whole arena started chanting my name.”
The bats in San Antonio are notorious for being rowdy Spurs fans, sometimes causing chaos during games. Back in 2019 even, bats were on a six game interruption streak at the Spurs’ arena.
But while it has been rather quiet as of later, one bat now celebrated a glorious return, an it couldn’t have been scripted any better. During the Spurs’ win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, one bat caused a game break, with Manu Ginobili himself present at the game.
This time however, Spurs mascot The Coyote, who quickly changed into a Batman costume, took care of business.
