The dominance of American basketball players has been a long-held belief, but recent times are starting to change that narrative, with foreign players gaining more and more recognition each year.
This discussion has intensified recently, fueled by the rise of foreign NBA players like Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The recent loss of Team USA in the FIBA World Cup has only added more fuel to the fire.
Adding his voice to this discussion is Oscar Schmidt, a five-time Olympian and the all-time leading scorer in FIBA World Cup history. Having faced both foreign and American players on the court, and now witnessing foreign talent dominate the NBA and international competitions, Schmidt believes foreign players are better than their American counterparts.
“I look for Luka Doncic, I look for Jokic,” the Hall of Famer said. “I look for all the foreign players much more than American players, because they are better than the American players. They’re much better.”
