During an appearance on TNT’s alternate broadcast of Friday’s Games 2 between the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves, Rich Paul made headlines with what likely was a Freudian slip. The Klutch Sports CEO said that LeBron James “is a free agent.”

James, who currently has an ‘open’ $51.4 million player option for next season, that he now seems less likely to opt into, given Paul’s statement.

While it still is very likely that James remains with the Lakers on a new contract that will likely span over three years, he’d still instantly become one of the most intriguing free agent in recent memory, if he were to decline his option.

While we certainly also have to keep an eye on where his son Bronny will end up after the draft, let’s explore three possible destinations for LeBron aside from the Lakers, just for the fun of it.

  1. Philadelphia 76ers: The 76ers have the second-most cap space of all NBA teams heading into the summer of 2024. With only a few players on the books, they have more than $58 million in space. Teaming up with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey could make the 76ers a favorite in the Eastern Conference.
  2. Oklahoma City Thunder: The Thunder have nearly $40 million in cap space. LeBron could play power forward alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and other young talents. His veteran leadership could benefit a team in need of experience.
  3. San Antonio Spurs: With over $34 million in space, the Spurs might be the best fit. They have 7-foot-5 superstar center Victor Wembanyama. LeBron’s playmaking skills could guide Wemby on the court and elevate the Spurs’ offense.

LeBron James’ free agency decision will undoubtedly be one of the most captivating storylines of the offseason. Whether he stays with the Lakers or explores new horizons, NBA fans everywhere will be eagerly awaiting his next move.
