In a move that underscores his commitment to team success, Mikal Bridges is set to follow Jalen Brunson’s example by negotiating a pay cut for his next contract with the New York Knicks. This strategic decision aims to provide the Knicks with greater salary cap flexibility, enabling them to strengthen their roster and enhance their championship prospects.

Bridges, who was traded to the Knicks in a blockbuster deal earlier this year, reportedly might also be willing to take a pay cut in a new contract, mirroring the selfless approach of his former Villanova teammate, Jalen Brunson. Per Evan Sidery:

“With Jalen Brunson’s record-setting bargain extension complete, the strong expectation is Mikal Bridges will also take a discount on his upcoming new long-term deal with the Knicks.”

By agreeing to a reduced salary, Bridges would allow the Knicks to allocate more resources towards acquiring and retaining key players.

With the additional financial flexibility, the Knicks could also explore opportunities to add depth to their roster, address any weaknesses, and position themselves as serious contenders in the highly competitive Eastern Conference.

Bridges’ potential willingness to also prioritize team success over individual financial gain would reflect a broader culture of sacrifice and teamwork that this Knicks squad is cultivating. This culture, championed by head coach Tom Thibodeau and embraced by players like Brunson and Bridges, is essential for building a cohesive and resilient team capable of competing at the highest level, and is something that has never been done before by players on a team to this extent.
