Joel Embiid is one of the best players in the NBA today, and certainly a trouble in all aspects of the game with the way he can score, get rebounds, and anchor his team’s defense. Despite his skills, a question mark continues to hang over Embiid’s career.
At 30 years old, neither a championship ring, nor a taste of the NBA Finals graces his resume. Worse, Embiid has yet to even reach the Eastern Conference Finals in his career, a point that continues to be held against him.
That said, Embiid believes he could have achieved much greater things if injuries hadn’t hampered him. Specifically, he believes he could’ve even become the greatest player of all time.
“I think so,” he said. “I think I’m that talented. Obviously you need to win championships, and to win championships you need other guys. You can’t do it by yourself. I want to win so bad. But if you don’t, you just got to understand that as long as you care about the right stuff, if it doesn’t happen, maybe it wasn’t meant to happen.”
“If you think about it, the thing that stopped me all these years is just freak injuries. Every single playoffs, regular season, people falling on my knee or breaking my face—twice. It’s always freak injuries at the wrong time.”
