Gary Payton was one of the best point guards to ever play the game. He is a one-time NBA champion, a nine-time All-Star, and a two-time All-NBA first teamer.
Payton also made the NBA All-Defense First Team in 9 consecutive seasons and won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1996. Because of his elite and pesky defense, he earned himself a special nickname – ‘The Glove’.
On top of that, Payton was one of the NBA’s biggest trash talkers, who, at times, wouldn’t shut up for one second of a game.
It turns out that Payton wasn’t nearly good enough when it comes to defending women (in a different way it may first appear).
The Glove now talked about having had his two sons just five months apart (from two women – for those who are bad at math). But not only did Payton have two sons more or less simultaneously, he also named both the same – Gary Payton Jr. and Gary Payton II, who plays for the Warriors:
“When I was dating Garry II’s mom who I met in high school, and I got into the NBA and I had a relationship with another lady. It so happened that they both had their kids in the same year.
They both wanted to name them Gary. So I said, ‘okay, cool. You can name one Gary Jr., one Gary II.’ It was one of them things that worked out for me; I’m happy for that. I’ve got two sons named after me, we can keep my name going on, so that’s all that I was talking about. Just keep my name going on.”
