Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid’s decision to play for Team USA in the 2024 Summer Olympics has ignited a wave of discontent among French basketball fans. The controversy stems from Embiid’s earlier commitment to represent France, a promise that seemed solidified when he received his French passport in 2022.

Born in Cameroon, a former French colony, Embiid’s journey to international basketball stardom has been remarkable. After moving to the United States at the age of 16, he quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the NBA’s most dominant players. In 2022, Embiid obtained French citizenship, leading many to believe he would don the French jersey in international competitions.

However, just a few months later, Embiid also became an American citizen. When it came time to choose which country to represent in the Olympics, he opted for Team USA, citing his long-term residence in the U.S. and the fact that his son was born there.

The decision has not been well-received in France. As Embiid arrived in the country with Team USA, he was met with heckles and jeers from French fans. Phrases like “Give back your passport” and “You should have played for France” were reportedly shouted at him. The French Basketball Federation’s president and general manager have also publicly criticized Embiid, accusing him of choosing an “easy” path to an Olympic medal.

Embiid has acknowledged the difficulty of his decision but stands by his choice. He has expressed that his experiences in the NBA, particularly the hostile environments during playoff games, have prepared him for any negative reactions he might face in France. Despite the backlash, Embiid remains focused on helping Team USA secure its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

This controversy highlights the complex nature of national allegiance in sports, especially for athletes with dual citizenship. While Embiid’s decision has disappointed many in France, it also underscores the personal and professional factors that athletes must consider when choosing which country to represent.

As the Olympics approach, all eyes will be on Embiid and Team USA. Whether the French fans’ discontent will affect his performance remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Joel Embiid’s choice has added an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming games.
