Even the most talented athletes can find themselves awestruck by their idols. Such was the case for Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell when he first encountered NBA legend Russell Westbrook. Mitchell recently shared this memorable experience on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast, offering fans a glimpse into his early days in the league and his admiration for Westbrook.
Donovan Mitchell, who burst onto the NBA scene with the Utah Jazz in 2018, has always been a fan of Russell Westbrook. Known for his explosive athleticism and fiery demeanor, Westbrook was a player Mitchell looked up to.
“I was a big Russell Westbrook fan, when he was dunking on people and he just be walking around screaming,” Mitchell recalled.
The moment of truth came during a game when Mitchell, still a rookie, saw Westbrook on the bench.
“I got to see him on the bench, and he’s doing his dances and stuff, and I’m over here in warmups like, ‘Bet where he at?’ So I see him and he stops and just looks at me and just stares at me and I’m like, ‘Oh s—t,'” Mitchell shared.
As the game progressed, Mitchell found himself guarding Westbrook. In a pivotal moment, he fouled Westbrook on a shot fake and complimented him on the move. Westbrook’s response was both surprising and humbling:
“Who the f—k are you?” Mitchell recounted.
This interaction was a “Welcome to the NBA” moment for Mitchell, who realized that despite the initial shock, it was all part of the competitive spirit that defines Westbrook.
Despite the intense introduction, Mitchell and Westbrook have developed a mutual respect over the years. Mitchell acknowledged that while Westbrook’s initial reaction put him in his place, it also helped him understand the level of intensity required to succeed in the NBA.
“After that, it was all love. I realized that’s just how he is,” Mitchell said.
