In a recent episode of the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony shared a surprising revelation: he almost rejoined the New York Knicks in the 2022 offseason. This news has sparked interest among fans who fondly remember Anthony’s impactful tenure with the team.
After a productive season with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he averaged 13.3 points per game, Anthony was in talks with the Knicks about a potential return. The Knicks, who were undergoing significant changes, including signing Jalen Brunson and pursuing Donovan Mitchell, saw an opportunity to bring back one of their most beloved players.
Anthony expressed his desire to return to New York, stating,
“My goal was always to make it back.”
However, the uncertainty surrounding his role on the team ultimately led him to decline the offer. The Knicks had proposed a position at the end of the bench, which Anthony felt was not suitable for him at that stage of his career.
Despite his strong ties to the Knicks and his wish to retire as a Knick, Anthony decided against rejoining the team. He explained that the not knowing when he would play was a significant factor in his decision.
“I had to stand on that,” Anthony said, emphasizing his need for a more defined role.”
Melo reveals that he turned down an opportunity to return to the Knicks
“I said, ‘Nah. Nah. I can’t. The not knowing of when you’re gonna play and not play, uh, I’d rather not go through that. I’ma bow out gracefully.’”

Carmelo Anthony’s legacy with the Knicks is undeniable. His contributions helped the team achieve its highest win total since the 1996-97 season, and his scoring prowess made him a fan favorite. Although the reunion didn’t materialize, Anthony’s impact on the Knicks and the NBA as a whole continues to be celebrated.
