It’s 2024, and the GOAT debate is as fractured as it’s ever been. Michael Jordan continues to get a ton of nod, especially from the older generation, but LeBron James has made this debate alive and evolving, thanks to his insane longevity.
The upcoming season presents yet another chance for LeBron to build on his legacy and sway more fans in the GOAT debate. Fresh off a gold medal and Olympic MVP, LeBron has the momentum on his side. But for many, it’s not just about the accolades but the fundamentals of the game.
Take former Charlotte Hornets point guard Muggsy Bogues for example. LeBron is incredibly skilled in his own right, but when it comes to free throws, Bogues sees a clear gap between LeBron and Jordan. And for him, that gap keeps the Chicago Bulls legend as the GOAT.
“LeBron can’t shoot free throws. I’m not saying that he can’t shoot free throws, but he’s not a great free-throw shooter… When it comes to the game of basketball, that’s where it separates MJ and LeBron, in terms of the skill set. Michael did not have deficiencies in his game, fundamentally.”
