Sacramento Kings guard and 15-year NBA veteran DeMar DeRozan surprised the incoming 2024 draft class at the NBA Rookie Transition Program (RTP) in New York. Each rookie received a copy of DeRozan’s newly released memoir, “Above the Noise: My Story of Chasing Calm,” along with a personal note from the six-time All-Star.
The RTP, established in 1986, is designed to help first-year players transition smoothly into the NBA by providing essential skills and information. DeRozan’s involvement added a personal touch to this year’s program, emphasizing the importance of mental health and resilience—key themes in his book.
DeRozan’s memoir, released on September 10, delves into his journey through the highs and lows of his career, offering insights and advice on maintaining mental well-being amidst the pressures of professional sports. His personal note to the rookies encouraged them to stay grounded and seek calm in the chaos of their new careers.
Several rookies, including Reed Sheppard, Jared McCain, Tristan da Silva, and Adem Bona, were seen eagerly flipping through the pages of DeRozan’s book. This gesture not only highlights DeRozan’s commitment to supporting the next generation of players but also underscores the NBA’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the mental health of its athletes.
