The debate over who is the greatest basketball player of all time has long been a topic of heated discussion among fans, and players alike. Names like Michael Jordan, and LeBron James frequently dominate these conversations. However, one name that often seems conspicuously absent is that of the late, great Kobe Bryant. Recently, Draymond Green offered his thoughts on why this might be the case.

In a conversation on “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” Draymond Green pointed out that one of the main reasons Kobe is often left out of the GOAT debate is his partnership with Shaquille O’Neal during the early years of his career.

“Number one, he played with you and people hold that against him,” Green explained to Shaq.

The dynamic duo of Kobe and Shaq led the Lakers to three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002, but critics argue that Kobe’s role as a “sidekick” during these years diminishes his GOAT credentials.

Green also highlighted the timing of Kobe’s career as a factor. Kobe entered the NBA just as Michael Jordan was exiting, and his prime years coincided with the rise of LeBron James.

“Kobe kind of fell into a weird time,” Green noted.

During the years when Kobe could have been the undisputed face of the league, LeBron was emerging as a new superstar, capturing the attention and admiration of fans and media alike.

Another point Green raised was the inconsistency of the Lakers’ performance during Kobe’s tenure. After Shaq left the team in 2004, the Lakers went through several challenging seasons before acquiring Pau Gasol in 2008, which led to two more championships in 2009 and 2010. However, the periods of struggle in between are often used against Kobe in GOAT discussions.

Despite these factors, Kobe Bryant’s legacy in the NBA is undeniable. Over his 20-year career, he amassed five championships, 18 All-Star selections, and an MVP award, among numerous other accolades. His work ethic, competitive spirit, and impact on the game continue to inspire players and fans around the world.
