38 years ago today, several NBA stars gathered in New York City for the taping of a special series of anti-drug public service announcements entitled “Don’t Foul Out.”
The PSAs were part of a larger campaign by the NBA to raise awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and to encourage young people to stay drug-free.
The campaign featured a number of NBA stars at the time, including Isiah Thomas, Mark Eaton, Mike Fratello, Julius Erving, and Patrick Ewing. The players spoke about their personal experiences with drugs, the impact that drug abuse can have on athletes’ careers, and the importance of making healthy choices. In one of the PSAs, Isiah Thomas says,
“I know what it’s like to grow up in a tough neighborhood. I know what it’s like to be tempted by drugs. But I also know that drugs can destroy everything you’ve worked for. So if you’re thinking about using drugs, please think again. Don’t foul out.”
In another PSA, Mark Eaton says,
“I’m a seven-foot-four center in the NBA. But drugs don’t care how big or strong you are. They can bring anyone down. So if you’re offered drugs, just say no. It’s not worth it.”
The “Don’t Foul Out” PSAs were aired on television and radio stations across the country. They were also distributed to schools and youth organizations. The campaign was widely praised for its positive message and for its role in raising awareness of the dangers of drug abuse.
