Former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins has voiced his disappointment with the Los Angeles Lakers’ offseason decisions, particularly their selection of Bronny James in the 2024 NBA Draft.
In an appearance on FanDuel’s “Run It Back” podcast, Cousins expressed his concerns about the Lakers’ commitment to winning.
Cousins didn’t hold back his criticism of the team’s decision to draft Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, in the second round. While acknowledging the significance of Bronny’s legacy and his father’s influence, Cousins questioned whether the Lakers are serious about competing this season.
“I love everything that it stands for. What Bron is doing with his legacy, just as a businessman and everything that comes with that – I think it’s a beautiful thing, I think it’s really dope,” Cousins said. “But as far as the Lakers actually competing, I take that as a sign they aren’t really serious [about competing]. With the way their season ended last year, with the high expectations, I expected more from them as far as making moves.”

The Lakers’ offseason moves included hiring first-time head coach JJ Redick and acquiring a couple of rookies via the draft, but no major roster changes. This lack of significant moves has left many fans and analysts disappointed, especially given the high expectations following last season’s performance.
Cousins’ comments reflect a broader sentiment among some fans and former players who believe the Lakers should have made more aggressive moves to strengthen their roster. The selection of Bronny James, while historic, has been criticized as a move that prioritizes legacy over immediate competitiveness.
Despite the criticism, the Lakers remain optimistic about their chances this season, with LeBron James continuing to lead the team and Bronny James making history as the first active father-son duo in the NBA. Only time will tell if the Lakers can meet the high expectations and prove Cousins wrong.
