Former NBA player Glen “Big Baby” Davis recently posted a farewell video on Instagram as he prepared to begin his 40-month prison sentence. The video, shared on October 22, coincided with the NBA’s opening day and showed Davis in surprisingly good spirits despite the gravity of his situation.

Davis, 37, was sentenced earlier this year for his involvement in a scheme that defrauded the NBA’s Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan. In the video, Davis appeared upbeat, smiling broadly and flashing a peace sign to the camera.

“Love you all,” he said. “Love y’all. Y’all be good!”

The former Boston Celtics champion was found guilty of submitting false invoices for medical and dental services that were never performed, collecting substantial reimbursements from the NBA’s health plan. The investigation revealed a systematic defrauding of the NBA’s benefits program, leading to charges against multiple individuals.

Davis’ cheerful demeanor in the video was unexpected, given the seriousness of his impending prison term. He maintained a positive attitude as he explained that he was on his way to FPC Duluth, a federal prison in Minnesota, where he would begin serving his sentence.

Best known for his role in helping the Boston Celtics win the 2008 NBA championship, Glen Davis had become a fan favorite for his hustle and physical style of play.

As Davis begins his prison term, he will also be required to pay $80,000 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release upon completing his sentence. Additionally, he must attend financial management courses and undergo mandatory drug treatment.
