In a recent episode of the OGs podcast, Victor Oladipo shared a candid story about how he was blindsided by the Oklahoma City Thunder after buying a house in the city.
Oladipo revealed that he only found out about the trade while he was on a plane, completely unaware of the organizational decision that would uproot his life.
“I got traded from OKC. Didn’t even know. They ain’t tell me just… I just bought a crib. Told them I was buying a crib,” Oladipo said on the podcast.
He went on to explain that he had informed the team of his personal plans, including purchasing a house, but the Thunder moved him without any warning.
Oladipo’s experience highlights the unpredictable nature of NBA trades and the personal toll they can take on players. Despite his rising star status, Oladipo found himself having to move frequently early in his career, including a trade from Orlando to OKC and then to Indiana within a year.
The former All-Star guard also recalled the frustration and disbelief he felt upon learning about the trade while disconnected from communication on a flight.
“I was on a plane and I was going home and I didn’t know,” Oladipo said. “And then when I landed, I just turned on my phone and I just was getting, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, they were just saying I just got traded to OKC.”
Despite the sudden move, Oladipo continued to thrive in his basketball career. His stint with the Thunder was short-lived, but it paved the way for his breakout seasons with the Indiana Pacers. In Indiana, Oladipo flourished, becoming an All-Star and one of the league’s standout performers.
