The hype that fueled Victor Wembanyama’s rookie season has dialed back slightly as he enters his second year. It’s not that expectations have disappeared, but rather that there’s a clearer understanding that his growth will include plenty of downs, not just the highs fans were once focused on.
While many are willing to give Wembanyama room for growth, an anonymous NBA scout was a bit less forgiving. With the sophomore big man averaging just 17.7 points on 41.3% shooting this season, the scout suggested that his offensive impact simply isn’t there.
“He’s absolutely awesome on defense, and not impactful at all on offense. He just looks like he’s playing without a whole lot of direction.”

To be fair, it’s far too early in the season to make definitive judgments on players, especially someone like Wembanyama. Whether he hits a wall or takes his game to another level is something only time will tell.
That said, when you’re as high-profile as Wembanyama, criticism is unavoidable. The question now is how he responds to those who doubt him during these rough stretches.
