It’s Magic Johnson versus Stephen Curry in the battle for the title of greatest point guard of all time, but former NBA player and current analyst Rashard McCants believes another name deserves recognition—Russell Westbrook.
Westbrook might be a shadow of his former self these days with the Denver Nuggets, but his recent triple-double against the Memphis Grizzlies of 12 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists is a reminder of the player he once was.
In his prime, he was a force to be reckoned with, averaging a triple-double for multiple seasons, carrying his team nightly, and winning an MVP award along the way. It’s clear that if Westbrook retired today, he would comfortably be regarded as one of the greatest point guards ever.
For McCants, though, that’s not enough. He believes Westbrook is statistically the greatest point guard of all time.
“How can Westbrook not be all the way up here at 200 triple-doubles? None of y’all can reach him. Magic, you can’t come back to get more triple-doubles like him. You can’t come back to make it look better than him. He (Westbrook) made it look so easy that we just stopped looking at him. Statistically, Russell Westbrook is the greatest point guard of all time.”
