Basketball Hall of Famer George Gervin recently experienced a blast from the past when he pulled a rookie card of himself—50 years after it was first released.
The special moment occurred during a promotional event by sports memorabilia company Topps. Gervin, who was invited as a guest of honor, participated in a card-breaking session where he opened packs of vintage basketball cards. To everyone’s delight, Gervin pulled his own rookie card, an iconic piece from the 1974 Topps Basketball set.
Gervin’s reaction was a mix of surprise and joy.
“I can’t believe this! It’s amazing to see my rookie card again after all these years,” he said, holding the card up for the audience to see.
The card features a young Ice Man in his San Antonio Spurs jersey, a reminder of his early days in the ABA before the league merged with the NBA.
