The 2024-25 Washington Wizards: A Historic Low

The Washington Wizards have etched their name in NBA history, but not for a reason they’d want to celebrate. Through their first 20 games of the 2024-25 season, the Wizards have set a new record for the worst point differential, being outscored by 337 points. This surpasses the previous record held by the 1970-71 Cleveland Cavaliers, who were outscored by 333 points in their first 20 games.

This stat gets even worse when you only consider their last 16 games, which they all lost. It these 16 games the Wizards are -313 in point differential, losing by an average of 19.56 points each game, and are currently on pace to a 9-73 record this season.

Why Have the Wizards Been So Bad? The Wizards’ roster has been devoid of major talent for a couple of years now. Key players like Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma have been trying to carry the team, but their efforts haven’t been enough to overcome the overall lack of depth and skill.

The Wizards rank among the worst in the league defensively. They give up an average of 123.1 points per game, which is the highest in the NBA. While their defense is a problem, their offense hasn’t been much better. The Wizards rank 29th in offensive rating, scoring only 108.1 points per game. This combination of poor offense and even worse defense has led to their historically bad point differential.
