The Boston Celtics recently honored their legendary point guard Bob Cousy with a 2024 championship ring at his home in Worcester. The 96-year-old Cousy, who played a pivotal role in the Celtics’ early success, received the ring as a tribute to his contributions to the franchise.

Celtics vice president of media and alumni relations, Jeff Twiss, made the special delivery to Cousy’s home, presenting him with the gleaming ring displayed on a rotating pedestal inside an elegant jewelry box. Cousy, visibly moved by the gesture, expressed his gratitude and joy.

“It’s amazing. I really wish Red Auerbach were here to see this with me,” Cousy said, referring to his legendary coach.

Cousy, who won the first six of the Celtics’ 18 championships during his playing career, remarked that receiving the ring “kind of closes the circle” in his relationship with the Celtics. He attended the Celtics’ banner-raising celebration on opening night, which he described as a meaningful and emotional experience.

Reflecting on his storied career, Cousy marveled at the ring’s design, noting the 18 emerald-cut diamonds on the outer bezel, each representing a championship. “It could blind a defender,” he joked. Despite not receiving formal championship rings during his playing days, Cousy treasures the one he was given following the 2008 championship year, as he contributed to that team as a broadcaster.

The Celtics’ gesture of honoring Bob Cousy with a championship ring is a testament to his lasting legacy and the impact he has had on the franchise and the sport of basketball. As the last living member of the Celtics’ first championship team, Cousy’s contributions continue to be celebrated and remembered by fans and the basketball community alike.
