On December 27, 1991, Tim Hardaway of the Golden State Warriors etched his name in NBA history, albeit for a rather unusual reason. In a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Hardaway attempted 17 field goals and missed every single one, setting an NBA record for most field goals attempted without making a single shot. Despite his shooting woes, the Warriors managed to pull off a 106-102 overtime victory.
The Warriors, part of the legendary “Run TMC” trio with Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond, were facing the expansion Timberwolves, who were struggling with a 4-20 record at the time.
Hardaway had an off night that would go down in NBA lore. He missed both of his three-point attempts and all 15 of his two-point shots. However, he did manage to score two points from the free-throw line and contributed with 13 assists, 4 blocks, and 5 steals.
While Hardaway struggled, his teammate Chris Mullin stepped up to the challenge. Mullin scored 36 points, including a crucial three-pointer with 17 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
After the game, Hardaway took the record in stride, famously saying,
“I had to get an NBA record somehow. I was never 0-for at any level. What can I say?”
