As the Brooklyn Nets navigate through a challenging season, NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the team has its sights set on a potential game-changer: Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo… at least if he ever pushes for a trade.
Despite the Nets’ current struggles, sitting at 13-25, the franchise is reportedly positioning itself to make a bold move for the “Greek Freak” should he ever request a trade. Per Marc Stein:
The Nets have long been described and continue to be painted as a team determined to be in position to trade for Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo someday.
Reminder: Someday depends on Antetokounmpo pushing the Bucks to trade him … something he has shown no known inclination to do. There remains zero expectation that the Bucks would even consider the notion of trading Antetokounmpo unless he pushed for it.
Rumbles nonetheless persist that the Nets are positioning themselves to be ready for such a moment if it arrives … with financial relief as well as copious amounts of draft capital to offer to the Bucks.
Antetokounmpo, who has been a cornerstone of the Bucks’ success since being drafted in 2013, is under contract through the 2026-27 season with a player option for 2027-28. However, the Nets are reportedly dreaming of adding him to their roster.
The Nets have a history of making big swings in the trade market, having previously acquired Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in 2019. While those moves brought some success, injuries and other factors prevented the team from reaching its full potential. Now, with a focus on rebuilding and accumulating young talent, the Nets are keeping an eye on the future and potential opportunities to land a superstar like Antetokounmpo.
However, there remains zero expectation that the Bucks would consider trading Antetokounmpo unless he pushes for it. The eight-time All-Star has shown no inclination to leave Milwaukee, where he has already won a championship and established himself as one of the league’s top players.
As the Nets continue to build around their young core, including promising talents like Cam Thomas, the team is preparing for any potential opportunities that may arise. While the immediate future may be challenging, the Nets are keeping their long-term goals in sight and hoping to one day add a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber to their roster.
