A Texas man was arrested in Indianapolis on charges of stalking WNBA star Caitlin Clark. The suspect, identified as Michael Lewis, 55, allegedly sent numerous threatening and sexually explicit messages to Clark via social media.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest on Sunday, following an investigation that revealed Lewis had traveled to Indianapolis with the intent to be near Clark.
The messages, which began in mid-December, continued even after police questioned Lewis at his hotel in Indianapolis. Despite being warned by law enforcement, Lewis persisted in sending harassing messages, claiming he was in an “imaginary relationship” with Clark. His presence in Indianapolis, far from his home in Texas, raised significant concerns for Clark’s safety.
Clark expressed her fear and concern over the situation. She reported altering her public appearances and patterns of movement due to the threats. The prosecutor’s office commended Clark for her courage in coming forward, highlighting the importance of addressing online harassment and its potential to escalate into physical violence6.
Lewis faces a felony charge of stalking, which carries a potential prison sentence of one to six years and a fine of up to $10,000.
