Kyrie Irving, born in Melbourne, Australia, is exploring the possibility of representing Australia in the 2028 Olympics.

This potential switch comes after Irving was left off the Team USA roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics, despite his previous gold medal win with Team USA in 2016.

Irving, who holds dual citizenship, has expressed his desire to play for the Australian national team:

“Man, we’re in the process of that right now, just trying to figure out the best route for me to be eligible,” Irving said during a recent interview.

Irving acknowledged the significant paperwork and regulatory hurdles involved in making the switch, including obtaining an exemption from FIBA’s secretary general.

The process of changing national teams is complex and requires approval from multiple entities. Irving would need clearance from USA Basketball, Basketball Australia, and FIBA to make the transition.

Irving’s potential move to the Boomers has generated excitement among Australian basketball fans, who see him as a valuable addition to the team. At 32 years old, Irving is still performing at a high level, averaging 24.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists with the Dallas Mavericks this season. His experience and skills could significantly boost Australia’s chances in the Olympics.

The journey to the 2028 Olympics is still in its early stages, and Irving will need to navigate the regulatory landscape to make his dream a reality.
