In a recent podcast episode, Howard Beck of The Ringer revealed that an NBA executive has suggested keeping an eye on Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant as a potential trade candidate this summer. The executive mentioned that if the Grizzlies were to have an early playoff exit, Morant’s name could be in the mix for trade discussions.

Beck shared,

“I’m constantly checking in with executives around trade deadline about like, okay, what we saw, what we didn’t see, what’s next, and in this league, you are always on the lookout for who’s the next wave of stars that are going to get dealt, right?… Somebody out of the blue said, keep an eye on Ja [Morant] this summer… I’m just saying it’s one of those things I’m just kind of keeping an eye on if they were to flame out early.”

The Grizzlies have been performing well this season, currently holding the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with a 36-18 record at the All-Star break. However, concerns about Morant’s durability and off-court behavior have been raised, and the team’s performance in the playoffs could influence their decision-making.

Morant has quickly become the face of the Grizzlies franchise since being drafted as the second overall pick in 2019. His impact on the court has been undeniable, earning him the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2020 and multiple All-Star selections. However, his rise to stardom has not been without challenges.

Throughout the season, whispers about Morant’s injury history and off-court incidents have circulated within the league. Some executives believe that these factors, combined with the pressure of leading a young team, could prompt the Grizzlies to explore trade options if they fail to make a deep playoff run. The potential for an early exit in the postseason could serve as a catalyst for such discussions.

While the Grizzlies have denied any intention of trading Morant, the executive’s comments highlight the unpredictable nature of the NBA and the constant evaluation of player value and team dynamics. The trade market for a player of Morant’s caliber would be highly competitive, with multiple teams likely expressing interest in acquiring the talented guard.

For now though, Morant remains focused on leading the Grizzlies to success and proving that he can be the cornerstone of the franchise.
