San Antonio Spurs’ All-Star center Victor Wembanyama will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 NBA season due to a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder. The Spurs announced the news following Wembanyama’s return from the All-Star break in San Francisco. This development is a significant blow to the team, as Wembanyama has been a dominant force this season, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.8 blocks per game in 46 appearances.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs, but it can also occur in other parts of the body, such as the shoulder. The clot can cause pain, swelling, and redness in the affected area. If the clot breaks free and travels to the lungs, it can cause a potentially life-threatening condition called a pulmonary embolism (PE).

The exact cause of Wembanyama’s DVT hasn’t been disclosed, but several factors can increase the risk of developing DVT, including prolonged immobility, injury, surgery, and certain medical conditions. Given Wembanyama’s intense playing schedule and the physical demands of professional basketball, it’s possible that these factors contributed to his condition.

Recovery from DVT typically involves anticoagulant medications to prevent further clotting and reduce the risk of complications. The Spurs have not provided a specific timeline for Wembanyama’s recovery, but they will likely take a cautious approach to ensure his long-term health and performance.

Wembanyama’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by the Spurs, but his health is the top priority.
