San Antonio Spurs’ Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich is not expected to return for the remainder of the 2024-25 NBA season, following a mild stroke he suffered in November. The 76-year-old coaching legend, who has been at the helm of the Spurs since 1996, is currently focused on his recovery, leaving his future with the team uncertain.

Popovich’s stroke occurred on November 2, 2024, just five games into the season. Since then, he has been undergoing a comprehensive rehabilitation program. In December, Popovich made his first public comments about his condition, expressing his desire to return to coaching.

“No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individuals who have been leading my rehabilitation process,” he said. “They’ve quickly learned that I’m less than coachable”.

Despite his determination, recent updates indicate that Popovich is not expected to resume his full-time coaching duties this season. Interim head coach Mitch Johnson has been leading the team in Popovich’s absence, guiding the Spurs through a challenging season. The team currently holds a 24-30 record and is 12th in the Western Conference.

Popovich’s absence has been felt deeply by the Spurs organization and fans alike. Known for his gruff demeanor and unparalleled coaching acumen, Popovich has led the Spurs to five NBA championships and is the all-time winningest coach in NBA history with 1,390 regular-season wins and 170 playoff victories.

The uncertainty surrounding Popovich’s future comes at a difficult time for the Spurs, who are also dealing with the season-ending injury of their star player, Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, further complicating the team’s prospects for the remainder of the season.

As Popovich continues his recovery, the Spurs community remains hopeful for his return. His leadership and experience have been instrumental in shaping the franchise’s success over the past three decades. Whether or not he returns to the bench, Popovich’s legacy in San Antonio and the NBA is firmly cemented.
