In a moment that will be remembered as one of the classiest acts in basketball history, Matthew Dellavedova, the Melbourne United guard and former NBA champion, gifted his NBL Finals MVP award to Illawarra Hawks’ Will Hickey after a thrilling championship series.

The Hawks secured their first title in 24 years with a 114-104 victory in Game 5, but it was Dellavedova’s selfless gesture that stole the spotlight.

Dellavedova, who had been named the Larry Sengstock Medallist as the series MVP, recognized Hickey’s pivotal role in the Hawks’ championship run. Hickey, who recorded 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists in the decisive Game 5, was the emotional heartbeat of Illawarra’s comeback in the series. As Dellavedova accepted the MVP trophy, he redirected the moment, saying,

“Davo, this belongs to you,” referring to Hickey’s nickname.

He then walked off the stage and handed the trophy to Hickey, who reluctantly accepted it amidst cheers from the crowd and his teammates. The gesture highlighted Dellavedova’s humility and respect for his opponent, earning praise from fans and fellow players alike.

The controversy surrounding the MVP voting system, which awards points game-by-game, added to the significance of Dellavedova’s act. While Dellavedova’s consistent performances throughout the series earned him the most votes, many believed Hickey’s contributions in the final games embodied the spirit of an MVP.
